My 90 year old grandmother, who still lives in Calcutta, once told me about the book “Gora” written by Rabindranath Tagore.
”I read it at 16, 35, and 60 years old,” she said in her soft voice. “And each time, I got something different from it.”
Because she was different.
Her understanding of the world was different.
In 2024, I saw “Madame Butterfly” for probably the 4th time at the Met. I probably saw it in my 30s, 40s and now 50s.
I was proud of myself for sticking with the genre even though I didn’t understand opera initially.
I now glean so much from it.
2. “Minor B” by Nile Harris, The Shed, New York City
There was a point during this production, where a man, half naked, was lying prostrate, pushing a box across the floor, with his head.
I turned to my friend Kelly said, “What the F&*K?!”
